The Top 5 Commercial Lighting Trends for 2021

Written by Michael Teolis | Jan 5, 2021 7:00:00 PM

Audio visual (AV) integrators use components such as audio, display, computer software and a vast array of other technologies to create complete experiences for end-users..

Yet the AV industry is becoming increasingly competitive. Integrators must consistently add new products to their lineup that empower them to build bigger and better experiences that go above-and-beyond their clients’ demands.

Despite being traditionally lower down the AV priority list than audio and projection, there is a renewed respect for the power of lighting and its ability to set the tone of a space.

Modern integrators are starting to prioritize lighting as a means of transforming commercial spaces, giving them access to an innovative new channel that both delights their clients and brings in more revenue for their business.

With that in mind, Colorbeam Lighting has created a list of the top five trends in commercial lighting right now and that is why these new innovations are an important new revenue stream and experiential offering for AV integrators.

#1 - The move towards LED lighting

Recent years have seen a shift away from incandescent and fluorescent lights and a move towards light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LED technology is advancing more quickly than any other type of bulb before it.

In fact, a 2019 report from the US Department of Energy stated: “LEDs have surpassed, or matched, all conventional lighting technologies in terms of energy efficiency, lifetime, versatility, and color quality, and, due to their increasing cost competitiveness, LEDs are successfully competing in a wide variety of lighting applications.”

LED bulbs are brighter and produce better light quality than traditional luminaires. Not only that but cost-effectiveness, energy-savings, design flexibility, tunability, dimming capability and low voltage applications (some of which we will touch on throughout this blog) are all features of LED lighting that make this lighting solution so popular today.

#2 - The ability for complete control over lighting experiences

Lighting integrations now have the ability to be used to attract, engage and retain customers longer by completely transforming commercial spaces at the press of a button. Through increased control of their lighting fixtures, commercial businesses can now create and deliver endless scene settings that make their space forever new and dynamic.

An example of this is Colorbeam’s innovative technology. Our patented GATEway processor allows commercial businesses and integrators to set scenes through tunability that allows users to accent spaces in infinite color, controllability that enables users to change lighting environments at the click of a button and flicker-free dimming.

#3 - Lighting that can improve health and wellbeing

There are a range of commercial spaces, from office environments to hospitality venues  that are turning their attention to human-centric lighting to either improve the productivity of their employees or improve the experience of their guests.

The tunability of light now means luminaires have applications in circadian rhythm. Here at Colorbeam, our patented DMX processor and Circadian Lighting Application work in tandem to continually transition the light emitted by lighting fixtures to best replicate the color of the sun - this helps to stimulate or suppress the body’s natural hormones depending on the sunrise or sunset, resulting in healthier and happier employees or guests.

#4 - A growing demand for outdoor illumination

The experience of a commercial property doesn’t start once a customer walks through the front doors, it starts as soon as they set their eyes on the actual building itself. That’s why many commercial businesses will turn their attention to outdoor lighting as we move through 2021.

AV integrators now have an opportunity to integrate lighting solutions that boost the outdoor experience of commercial spaces. Outdoor lighting can be used to design outdoor spaces, provide security, improve brand recognition, build ambience, increase curb appeal and much more.

#5 - The transition to low voltage infrastructure

The emergency of LED lighting fixtures and its minimal power requirements have paved the way for innovative low voltage lighting infrastructures, in which luminaires are powered by nothing more than a single CAT 6 network cable - powering fixtures with nothing more than 12/24/48v instead of the 120v of traditional high voltage infrastructure.

This low voltage infrastructure doesn’t require an electrician, meaning AV intrategors can complete the installation for the end-users. Once integrated, low voltage lighting and the use of LED luminaires provides clients with new opportunities in tunability, human-centric lighting, controllability, flicker-free dimming and environment setting.
